colonic hydrotherapy

what is colonic hydrotherapy?

Colonic hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation as it also known is a gentle internal bath which cleanses your large intestine (colon) to help the evacuation of waste materials. These waste materials include toxins, gas, mucus deposits and faecal matter.

If you are looking for deep abdominal massage rather than colonic irrigation, please see our blog post about this specialised colonic massage technique.

what are the benefits of colonic hydrotherapy?

Benefits of colonic hydrotherapy include:

  • Improved bowel tone and function - reduces bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, diverticulosis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Detoxification - removes toxins from the bowel, helps reduced the toxic load on the liver and kidneys.
  • Clearer skin - acne, psoriasis and dark circles under the eyes may be reduced.
  • Immune system - reducing the toxic load on the body can improve the immune system and reduce inflammation in certain conditions.
  • Weight management - with lifestyle and dietary changes, colonic hydrotherapy can exert positive effects in a weight management program.
  • Better nutrient absorption and bacterial balance - when the bowel is fully functional more nutrients are absorbed from the diet. Colonic hydrotherapy removes both good and bad bacteria from the bowel but with the correct aftercare (see below) a better bacterial balance can be found.
  • General wellbeing - colonics lead to improved mental wellbeing, better sleep patterns and increased energy levels.

what is involved in colonic hydrotherapy?

Before your initial colon hydrotherapy session, you will be asked to complete a detailed questionnaire about your health and lifestyle. The colonic hydrotherapist will go through this with you to ensure that colonic hydrotherapy is suitable for you. It is natural to be nervous but don't worry - we've had colonics too and will put you at your ease. You will be asked to change into a gown and lie on the therapy bed on your side. Warm water will be gently introduced via a speculum into your colon where it will begin to rehydrate the lining of the bowel and soak waste materials away. Any waste materials will exit through a tube that is plumbed into the waste system - no unpleasant smells!

After about ten minutes, you will be asked to move onto your back and the therapist will gently massage your abdominal area. The therapist may alternate the temperature and pressure of the water, within comfortable limits, to maximise the effectiveness of your treatment. Occasionally you may experience a slight cramping, but just let us know and we'll adjust the pressure accordingly. Towards the end of the therapy, you will be asked to move back onto your side. Finally, after the colonic session has finished, you will be asked to go to the toilet as normal - no feeling of urgency or need for embarrassment.
