Colonic hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation as it also known is a gentle internal bath which cleanses your large intestine (colon) to help the evacuation of waste materials. These waste materials include toxins, gas, mucus deposits and faecal matter.
If you are looking for deep abdominal massage rather than colonic irrigation, please see our blog post about this specialised colonic massage technique.
Benefits of colonic hydrotherapy include:
The first session with your colonic hydrotherapist will take slightly longer than subsequent sessions due to detailed health questionnaire. You can expect the first session to take around 1¼ - 1½ hours and subsequent sessions to take between 1 - 1¼ hours.
Both Sue and Emma are fully insured and qualified members of the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy. We use a new and sterile disposable speculum and tube kit for every treatment to ensure your absolute safety without compromise. Finally, our Dotolo Toxygen machine has many built-in safety and hygiene features including a pressure and temperature cut-off mechanism to guarantee the safest level of care.
Before your initial colon hydrotherapy session, you will be asked to complete a detailed questionnaire about your health and lifestyle. The colonic hydrotherapist will go through this with you to ensure that colonic hydrotherapy is suitable for you. It is natural to be nervous but don't worry - we've had colonics too and will put you at your ease. You will be asked to change into a gown and lie on the therapy bed on your side. Warm water will be gently introduced via a speculum into your colon where it will begin to rehydrate the lining of the bowel and soak waste materials away. Any waste materials will exit through a tube that is plumbed into the waste system - no unpleasant smells!
After about ten minutes, you will be asked to move onto your back and the therapist will gently massage your abdominal area. The therapist may alternate the temperature and pressure of the water, within comfortable limits, to maximise the effectiveness of your treatment. Occasionally you may experience a slight cramping, but just let us know and we'll adjust the pressure accordingly. Towards the end of the therapy, you will be asked to move back onto your side. Finally, after the colonic session has finished, you will be asked to go to the toilet as normal - no feeling of urgency or need for embarrassment.
This will depend on the state of your bowel's health and why you want colonic treatments. Until you have had your first colonic with us, we cannot make any recommendations. As a guide, a healthy person who wants regular colonic hydrotherapy to maintain health bowel function will be recommended about four colonics per year.
Before your colonic hydrotherapy session, please ensure that you have had a light meal within the previous two hours and something to drink.
After the colonic hydrotherapy session we recommend that you do not eat spicy or heavy foods nor drink alcohol for the first 24 hours. Depending on the outcome of your session we may make dietary recommendations, and we normally recommend an enteric coated probiotic supplement.
If you have any of the following conditions or diseases, you will not be able to undergo colonic hydrotherapy. If you are unsure, please speak to one of our friendly colonic hydrotherapists.
In addition, you will not be able to have a colonic prior to or after surgery.
