Reflexology is an holistic therapy in that it uses the feet to treat the whole body. It aims to restore balance by increasing the circulation to the internal organs, glands and other parts of the body. It is an extremely relaxing, non-invasive way of helping to harmonise the body's functions; helping the body heal itself by breaking down tension, relieving stress and improving the blood and nerve supply.
Reflexology is a specific pressure technique applied to the feet (or hands) where all the internal body structures and organs are mapped or mirrored in miniature. It is a simple, non-invasive treatment which helps to maintain a balance between all major bodily systems.
Benefits of reflexology include:
During the therapy, you will lie on a standard therapy couch with your upper body elevated for comfort, and you will be covered with a light blanket or towel to ensure you don't get cold. The treatment commences with a relaxing foot massage followed by the reflexology treatment, working on one foot at a time.
Avoid alcohol or a heavy meal before a massage. Make sure you allow time for your massage so you don't feel rushed and stressed. This enables your body to gain the most from your treatment.
Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and heavy food for 24 hours. As with all therapies involving massage, you may experience slight tiredness or mild flu-like symptoms for up to 24 hours afterwards due to the toxin release from your body.
You will need to tell your therapist if you suffer from any of the following:
The therapist can massage you but not over any areas affected by local skin conditions e.g.skin diseases, undiagnosed lumps or bumps, varicose veins, cuts, bruises, abrasions, inflammation, scar tissue or sunburn.
If you have any of the following you may need your doctor's approval before massage can be undertaken - pregnancy, thrombosis, phlebitis, high or low blood pressure or oedema. In addition, you will not be able to have a massage prior to or after surgery.
