wellbeing and performance coaching

I take a holistic view when deal with a client who has pain as the symptom is often just the tip of the iceberg. I may use various techniques including:
  • Nutrition & Lifestyle Coaching
  • Massage Therapy / Neuromuscular Therapy
  • Movement Analysis
  • Training for Function

nutritional and lifestyle coaching

Nutrition and Lifestyle are elements that are often overlooked when individuals are striving to achieve personal goals. The two are intimately related to each other and it is important to get a balance with both, not only to reach a goal, but to help attain optimal health. Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching will help identify imbalances that may be hindering your optimal health and wellbeing potential. Problematic areas that can be identified include:

  • Blood sugar fluctuations
  • Fat/Protein/Carbohydrate imbalances
  • Energy fluctuations
  • Poor sleeping patterns
  • Irregular mood swings

Too often clients adopt the "no pain no gain" attitude when tying to lose weight and think that training hard and often will get them there. Nothing could be further from the truth, individuals who have high stress levels and poor, or even, average nutrition intake will not achieve long term weight management through this approach. "Balance is the key to optimal health and wellbeing".

metabolic typing

Metabolic Typing is a system that helps identify your individual nutritional requirements. One of the main focuses of this system is to ensure that you are eating your ideal macronutrient ratio (adequate amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and fats) with every meal or snack. Failure to eat your ideal combination could lead symptoms, including:

  • Weight gain
  • Sugar/chocolate cravings
  • Lack of energy
  • Mood swings
  • Poor sleeping habits
  • Reduced concentration ability

Eating your ideal macronutrient ratio along with good quality foods will naturally aid the body's detoxification process. Combine this with drinking good quality water and reducing stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol will go a long way to promoting your optimal wellbeing and performance.

As a Certified Metabolic Typing Advisor, I am able to take clients through various programmes devised by Healthexcel that are designed to balance the body and promote optimal health and wellbeing.

what is "functional training"?

"Functional Training" is the new buzz word in the fitness industry. A more accurate term for "Functional Training" is "Training for Function". The benefits of Training for Function include:

  • Burning more calories per workout
  • Improving core strength
  • Reducing the risk of injury
  • Increasing mental stimulation
  • Exercises can be performed with very little equipment and in very little space
  • Thousands of exercises to choose from

training for function

Training Programmes should be designed specifically for each individual according to their wants and needs. The programme should be aimed at helping individuals achieve their personal goals. Just as important the programme should help individuals improve their ability to move better, thus performing their daily functional activities more easily whilst reducing the risk of injury. This may include:

  • Picking up/carrying children
  • Lifting carrying objects
  • Cleaning the house/car
  • Walking the dog

If you move better, you will feel better
If you feel better, you will enjoy life
If you enjoy life, you will realise your true goals
If you realise your true goals you will achieve them.

neuromuscular therapy (NMT)

NMT is a form of Massage Therapy that can be used to help with the following conditions:

  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Whiplash
  • Tennis/Golfers Elbow
  • Respiratory Problems
  • Sciatica
  • Rotator Cuff (shoulder) dysfunction
  • Carpal Tunnel Outlet Syndrome

NMT is a thorough method of rehabilitation from acute (recent) and chronic (long duration) pain syndromes. Other benefits of NMT include:

  • Aids in releasing muscle spasm
  • Breakdown of scar tissue
  • Releasing of Trigger Points (hypersensitive area that disrupts circulation of nutrients)
  • Improves flexibility and mobility of muscle

NMT complements Training for Function programmes as muscles that are free from tension enjoy moving as they were designed to.

pain therapy

Pain is one of the biggest stressors to the body; it can make you feel miserable! Pain symptoms can have many causes, these include:

  • Dehydration
  • Poor posture
  • Emotional stress
  • Poor nutrition
  • Incorrect training
  • Too much/too little activity

In order to help reduce pain it is very important not just to focus on the symptomatic area, but the system as a whole. A painful shoulder might be caused by the opposite hip not moving very well. If the hip is not addressed the shoulder will struggle to make progress as the potential cause of the pain has not been dealt with. The same goes with all of the bullet points above, anyone of them could be the cause of pain so all should be investigated in order to have the best possible chance of success.
